Cool and Comfortable Summer Baby Gear – Keep Your Bub Happy in the Heat
Summer in Australia can be a scorcher, and while most of us are used to throwing on thongs and heading straight for the beach or the pool, things get a bit trickier when there’s a baby in the mix. Our littlest Aussies are more sensitive to heat, and they can’t tell us when they’re too hot or uncomfortable. So it’s up to us to make sure they stay cool, comfy, and protected during those warmer months.
Thankfully, there’s a heap of summer baby gear designed to beat the heat and make life easier for both parents and bub. If you’re heading out for a stroll, relaxing at home, or planning a beach day, here’s BGA’s guide to the must-have baby gear that’ll keep your little one chill all summer long.
1. Breathable Baby Clothes
Start with the basics – clothes! In summer, it’s all about lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton and bamboo. These materials are soft on baby’s skin and allow air to circulate, helping to prevent heat rash and discomfort.
Look for:
- Onesies and singlets with short sleeves or sleeveless designs
- Loose-fitting rompers with press studs for easy changes
- Wide-brim hats with neck flaps to shield bub from the sun
Stick to light colours too – they reflect heat instead of absorbing it. And always check labels to make sure clothing is made from natural fibres rather than synthetics, which can trap heat.
2. Nappy Time Must-Haves
No one wants to be stuck in a sticky nappy on a hot day. To keep your baby’s bottom cool and rash-free, opt for breathable nappies and lightweight nappy covers if you’re using cloth nappies. Consider letting bub go nappy-free for short periods at home to give their skin some fresh air.
Nappy rash creams that are zinc-based can also help form a protective barrier, especially when humidity is high.
3. A Pram That’s Summer-Ready
If you’re out and about, a well-ventilated pram with sun protection is a must. Many modern prams come with mesh panels for airflow and extendable sun canopies that offer UPF50+ protection. You can also grab a clip-on fan that attaches to the pram, giving your little passenger their own breeze as you stroll.
Just remember – never cover the pram with a blanket or muslin cloth to block the sun. It might seem like a good idea, but it can actually trap heat and raise the temperature inside the pram.
Instead, look for pram sunshades or UV covers that are specifically designed to allow airflow while blocking harsh rays.
4. Cooling Accessories
There are a few handy little accessories that can make a big difference on hot days:
- Cooling mats: Some brands make gel cooling pads that fit into the pram or car seat. They absorb heat and help regulate your baby’s body temperature.
- Cold teething rings: Store teething toys in the fridge for a refreshing treat when bub needs something to chew on.
- Lightweight swaddles: If your baby still loves being swaddled, choose muslin wraps or bamboo blankets. They’re breathable and soft – perfect for warm nights.
5. Hydration Helpers
Babies under six months don’t need water – breastmilk or formula is enough – but they might want to feed more often when it’s hot. Older babies can sip on cooled boiled water between feeds. A good sippy cup or straw bottle with handles is great for encouraging independence while keeping them hydrated.
For breastfeeding mums, you might find bub gets fussy or feeds shorter but more frequently in summer. Don’t stress – that’s totally normal. Just make sure you’re drinking enough water yourself too!
6. Baby Carriers That Breathe
If you’re a fan of babywearing, make sure your carrier is suitable for summer. Look for styles made from mesh or lightweight cotton, and avoid anything bulky that might cause both you and bub to overheat.
Some great warm-weather baby carriers include:
- Ring slings (easy to adjust and breathable)
- Wraps made from linen or bamboo blends
- Structured carriers with mesh panels and lumbar support
And don’t forget to pop a hat on baby’s head and use a sunscreen if they’re over six months.
7. Bathtime Bliss
A cool bath at the end of the day can help settle a cranky, hot baby. Add a few soft toys or a silicone scoop cup for some fun splash time. If you’re heading to the beach or pool, make sure bub wears a rashie or swim onesie with UV protection.
Bonus tip: Pack a portable baby pool or splash mat for backyard water play. It’s a brilliant way to cool down on a hot arvo without needing to go anywhere.
8. Safe Sleep in the Heat
When nights stay warm, it’s important to dress your baby appropriately for sleep. A 0.2 (room temp above 27°C) or 0.5 (room temp below 27°C) TOG sleep sack or light muslin wrap is ideal for hot nights. Avoid overdressing, and use a fan in the room to keep air circulating (but don’t point it directly at bub).
Make sure their cot or bassinet is away from windows and out of direct sunlight. A room thermometer can help you monitor the temperature and make safe sleep choices.
Summer with a baby doesn’t have to be stressful. With the right gear, a bit of planning, and a watchful eye, you can keep your little one cool, comfortable, and happy – and maybe even enjoy the sunshine yourself!
Whether you're chilling in the backyard, heading out for a beach picnic, or just trying to survive another 40-degree day, having the right summer baby gear can make all the difference.
So stock up on those breathable clothes, invest in a quality pram fan, and don’t forget the sunscreen. Here’s to a safe, cool, and fun Aussie summer with your bub!
